As a way to directly target fat that doesn’t typically respond to exercise or diet changes, chin and neck liposuction involves removing fat deposits from under the chin and along the neck area.

The procedure is relatively small in scale compared with larger forms of liposuction, but it still involves careful preparation, detailed surgical steps, and a structured recovery period.

To understand how it works, it helps to read about each stage of the process, from what happens before surgery right through to how the body responds afterwards.

What do chin and neck liposuction patients need to do before the procedure?

Before the procedure is performed, patients will usually have a consultation where the practitioner examines the chin and neck area to understand how much fat is present. Taking a closer look at the area can help to determine whether or not liposuction is the appropriate approach.

The consultation also allows your practitioner to explain what the operation involves, how long recovery may take, and what kind of results you can reasonably expect.

Pre-operative instructions are normally given once surgery is confirmed, which may include stopping certain medications that increase bleeding risk, arranging time off work for recovery, and making practical plans for the first few days after surgery when rest is most important.

We usually recommend taking Arnica tablets one week before and one week after the procedure. Arnica is a natural medicine which is proven to reduce bruising and swelling after surgery,

During the consultation we explain the difference between normal liposuction and high definition liposuction in the neck.

The patient usually comes back for another meeting after the consultation when the nurse tries the compression garment on them, confirms the procedure date and provides pre-procedural instructions and signs all the required consents and paperwork. This meeting is called presurgery.

How is the chin and neck liposuction procedure performed?

The procedure usually only requires small incisions, that can be placed in discreet locations (often under the chin or just behind the ears). Typically only a few millimetres in length, the incisions are used as entry points for the cannula, which is a thin tube that connects to a specialised suction device.

The skin and the subcutaneous got numbed by injecting local anaesthestic and tumescent fluids. The whole chin became tumesced and numbed.

The practitioner inserts the cannula through the incision sites and begins moving it back and forth to loosen the fat cells. We use Vaser cannula first to melt the fat and tighten the skin before suction. These cells are then suctioned out using the suction device, removing a sufficient level of fat while avoiding over-removal.

The small incisions are then closed, often with dissolvable sutures. A compression garment or bandage is usually applied to the area to help manage swelling and support the tissues as they begin to heal.

What is recovery like after the procedure?

Recovery after chin and neck liposuction is typically shorter than recovery from larger liposuction procedures, however, it still requires care and patience.

It is recommended to sleep on two pillows after chin and neck liposuction in the first three to four days to avoid swelling in the lower eyelids and face the post operatively.

Most swelling reduces noticeably within the first two weeks, but more subtle swelling may remain for longer. Bruising tends to fade around the same time, but it can vary from patient to patient. Wearing a compression garment consistently, as advised by your practitioner, can help the tissues adjust to the changes underneath.

Patients can often return to work within one to two weeks, depending on the physical demands of their job. Strenuous exercise, particularly any activities that involve sudden movements of the head and neck, should be carefully avoided until the area has healed sufficiently.

Follow-up appointments need to be scheduled to monitor the healing of the area, remove sutures if non-dissolvable ones were used, and ensure that no complications such as infection or fluid build-up are occurring. If any complications have occurred, your practitioner will provide you with advice on the next steps to take.

Starting from week two, it is recommended to have lymphatic drainage on a weekly basis either manually or by using a Zwave machine to get the best possible results.

In Chelsea Cosmetics we have been adapting lymphatic drainage protocol after chin and neck liposuction for more than ten years which have added to the final outcome.

What results can be expected?

Generally, the results of chin and neck liposuction are not fully visible straight away due to swelling. As swelling subsides, the reduction in fat becomes clearer over time. Most patients begin to see noticeable changes within a few weeks after the procedure.

It is important that patients understand liposuction removes fat cells permanently, but it does not prevent new fat cells from developing in the area if significant weight gain occurs later. Maintaining a stable weight through healthy habits is often recommended to help maintain the results.

Mentioning that excess fat in the chin is usually a hereditary thing and chin and neck liposuction removes a good number of cells from the area and even if gained weight, it is found that does not affect the chin to a limit that would make it obvious.

The final results of chin and neck liposuction can usually be assessed at around three to six months, when swelling has largely subsided and the tissues have had time to adapt to the changes. At this point, follow-up discussions with the practitioner often take place to assess your satisfaction with the results and see whether any additional procedures might be considered.

Who is suitable for chin and neck liposuction?

As the same goes for any other surgical procedure, patients should be considered as suitable before proceeding.

Patients should be in overall good health, and be able to recover well after the procedure. Even if your particular procedure is not too extensive, it is still a surgical method that your body will need to sufficiently recover from afterwards. Certain health conditions can mean that a surgical procedure may not be the best option.

Suitable candidates should understand what the procedure can achieve, particularly what is realistically possible when it comes to results. It’s also important to understand the importance of following instructions during recovery, and to be able to take the necessary time off work to rest at home in the earlier days.

Your practitioner will be able to discuss patient suitability in more detail during your consultation process. If it is the case that liposuction may not be a suitable approach for you, you will typically be able to discuss the possibility of any alternative treatment options.
