Many of us know that liposuction is designed to remove fat from targeted areas of the body, but how the skin will respond afterwards is an important question to explore.

Once fat is removed from an area of the body, the skin in the area will need to have enough elasticity to naturally tighten, or other procedures may be more suitable.

Generally speaking, the liposuction procedure itself is not actually designed to tighten the skin in the area. There are other types of liposuction, particularly Vaser liposuction, that does have an added step that can aid in skin tightening. We’ll explore this further in this blog.

At Chelsea Cosmetics Melbourne, Dr Attalla offers traditional liposuction, laser liposuction and Vaser liposuction. Vaser liposuction is designed to have some skin-tightening effects, which can make it a sufficient option for some patients.

How does the skin respond to fat removal after liposuction?

Liposuction itself isn’t designed to address the skin in the area. So, when fat is removed through liposuction, the skin above it is left to adjust to the change in shape of the area naturally.

There are some factors that could determine the skin elasticity and skin retraction: Patient age is one of the most important factors, the younger the patient the better is the chance of skin retraction.

The second factor is the patient race and skin color, the darker the skin the better is the skin retraction. Dark skin has much more elastin and has a much better chance of retraction than fair skin. The third factor is skin sun damage, the more skin is damaged by sun the less is the chance of skin retraction.

There are also negative factors that could affect skin retraction negatively like sudden loss of weight, patients with some diseases or connective tissue diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus, these diseases lowers the chance of skin retraction. Another factor is smoking which affects skin retraction dramatically by reducing blood supply, breaking down the elastin and collagen, increasing the free radicals in the skin and reducing the normal recovery process of the skin.

In younger patients, or in those with good skin elasticity, the tissue can often contract to some extent on its own. Skin elasticity depends on the amount of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, which depletes as we age or sometimes due to other health or lifestyle factors.

In patients with reduced elasticity, the skin may not retract as effectively, which can mean that alternative options could be more suitable. However, it depends on the condition of the treatment area.

How does Vaser liposuction work?

While traditional liposuction is still a go-to method for fat removal, Vaser liposuction is a more high-tech option that uses ultrasound energy to break down fat before it is removed.

The ultrasound energy creates a heating effect in the surrounding tissue, which can stimulate some collagen and elastin production. The added element means that Vaser can offer a degree of skin tightening alongside fat removal.

While Vaser can have some skin tightening effects, it will still depend on the patient’s skin quality and the amount of excess skin they may have. It can also depend on the area of the body that is being treated.

How do cosmetic doctors assess suitability for liposuction?

Before surgery is performed, the practitioner will assess the quality of the skin, as well as the amount and distribution of fat.

A careful assessment allows them to determine whether liposuction, Vaser liposuction, or a different type of procedure would be the most appropriate option. Apart from skin quality, your practitioner will also need to discuss important health factors to fully assess your suitability.

If you’re a suitable candidate, you’ll then discuss what results can be achieved and what you may be able to expect when it comes to how the skin in the area will respond.

Can you take steps to help the skin tighten in the area during recovery?

While skin elasticity and the type of liposuction procedure you have had will be the main influences in how your skin will respond, you can take some steps during recovery to aid the skin tightening process.

Firstly, wearing your compression garments consistently can help the tissue heal. Compression garments are designed to support the area after liposuction, which can not only help with results but can also reduce swelling.

Another important step is to follow instructions when it comes to reducing physical activity, and slowly increasing your activity levels as you heal. Ensuring that you give your body the rest it needs during recovery will help the area heal sufficiently.

Garment is a very important factor in skin retraction and good even results. After surgery the body starts to heal by forming a new mesh of tissues called fibrous tissues which brings the under surface of the skin together and adds to skin retraction. Failure of wearing the garment and early exercises would cause disruption of this mesh like structure and would interfere with the process of natural skin tightening.

How long do the results take to show after liposuction?

When liposuction is performed, it’s common for swelling to obscure the results at first. This is part of the healing process and will gradually reduce over the following weeks.

The timing of the result may vary due to many reasons, but usually two weeks after liposuction would be the time of maximum swelling. The whole area we operate on gets very swollen and the garment gets tighter. The following two weeks up to two months the swelling goes down gradually.

During the third and fourth week there will be areas of hardness which represent the early stages of deep tissue healing and new fibrous tissue formation. These hard areas are part of the normal-healing process and they are not alarming if they are not tender or hot.

From the second to the sixth month the hard lumpy areas start to soften and the texture of the tissues feels more natural.

As the swelling subsides, the skin begins to adapt to the reduced volume beneath it. In standard liposuction, this adaptation relies entirely on the skin’s natural elasticity. In Vaser liposuction, the added stimulation of collagen can lead to a mild to moderate tightening effect during this same period.

Essentially, it can take a few months – sometimes up to six months – before the full results are completely visible, as the skin continues to contract and the tissues heal internally. Collagen production and skin contraction take time, so the results are gradual rather than immediate.

Can you have other treatments after liposuction to tighten the skin?

You may be able to undergo other treatments after liposuction to focus on the skin in the treated area, such as non-surgical skin tightening treatments or surgery to remove excess skin.

However, it’s important to ensure that liposuction is actually a suitable method to efficiently achieve the results you want before undergoing the procedure. It may be that, if you do have a more moderate chance of having excess skin after the procedure, you may be more suitable for a different surgical approach that includes removing excess tissue.

It will always depend on your personal needs and the condition of the area you are treating, which is why it’s helpful to have a consultation with your chosen practitioner.
